The Program
Located on 200 acres in Marlborough, Massachusetts, the Hillside School campus is home to our summer term. Our expansive facility includes academic buildings, dorm houses, computer access, library, student center and dining hall. The campus offers many onsite activity services, including: a low ropes course, climbing wall, tennis court, multiple playing fields, an outdoor swimming pool and a working farm. In addition, your son or daughter can participate in a variety of educational and recreational off campus activities. The summer term includes academic enrichment in math, English and English as a Second Language. The summer term also embraces leadership training, outdoor-adventures as well as athletics.
Academic Enrichment
Academic enrichment courses are offered in language arts, mathematics and English as a Second Language. Specific topics include reading comprehension, study skills, creative writing, pre-algebra, geometry, and other mathematical levels.
Leadership Training
Leadership training is one the cornerstones of Hillside School's curriculum. Through the mediums of outdoor adventure, a low ropes course and a climbing wall, the students are provided the opportunity to develop leadership skills and gain self-confidence. Students begin to foster a strong sense of community, connection, and mutual respect for one another through their experiences over the summer.
The Hillside Summer Term also offers a formal leadership role in the form of proctors. Proctors are trained to have responsibilities in all areas of campus life from the dorm houses to the classroom to the dinning hall and the leadership training program as a whole.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Designed for our international students, our ESL courses focus on the major strands of the English language. These include reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking skills. Additionally, the students learn about American culture and are guided as they assimilate to their new environment. Activities in the ESL classes include, but are not limited to, games, role-plays, written assignments, reading exercises, and vocabulary units. Students' language-skills are assessed when they arrive, and the curriculum is then modified to respond to enhance individual strengths, and respond to individual needs.
Enrollment and Registration
Our coed program is for children ages 10-15 who may enroll in our day or boarding program. We also offer a Counselors-In-Training program for students who are at least 16 years of age.
