Program
Athletics
Athletics plays an integral role in the lives of Hillside students and is an important part of the educational program of the school. Athletics promotes social skills that are essential to children's development. Cooperation with others, perseverance, school spirit, acceptance of failure and working toward success, building self-confidence, improving skills, physical activity and play are but a few of the components the program promotes.
Children with different skills and skill levels benefit from a wide array of choices in each season that offers something for a variety of interests. Finding an activity or sport in which a child can find interest, success or even passion is the hope of our program and is a building block of healthy child development.
Each season students are offered seven to eight activities/sports in which to choose. After a trial period in which they are encouraged to try out different activities they must choose one to participate in for that season.
Activities/sports choices reflect the varied student interest and abilities of our students. Students with athletic skill can excel in competitive sports on the varsity level or more participatory on the junior varsity level. Students with less interest in competitive sports can find fun and success in non-competitive activities.
