Hillside celebrates the DAR

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) President General Linda Calvin was among the DAR dignitaries on hand as Hillside School honored its 85 year association with the national patriotic organization on October 7.

More than 100 DAR members attended Hillside’s DAR Day event which was a featured stop on President General Linda Calvin’s “Pathways to Liberty” countrywide tour.

A highlight of the day’s activities were student-led tours of the Hillside campus. DAR members were able to view and visit the school’s library; student center; the Academic & Health Center, including the Lebovitz Health Center; and the new Chase Chapel, formerly Hillside’s Wrestling Barn.

The event guests were also able to tour the archives of the Massachusetts state chapter of the DAR which are housed at Hillside School. The archives contain a wealth of historical information and documents about both the state and national chapters of the DAR.

While the skies initially threatened rain, the weather eventually cooperated and Hillside’s distinguished visitors were treated to a dazzling display of autumn colors, courtesy of the many trees that populate the school’s grounds.

Both during and after the tours, many of the DAR members remarked on Hillside’s continuing development with special praise for expansion of the school’s campus infrastructure and academic programs.

President General Calvin touched upon Hillside’s progress in her remarks to a school-wide assembly welcoming the DAR visitors to Hillside.

“You have much to be proud of here at Hillside School,” Ms. Calvin stated in her remarks to the Hillside community. “We congratulate you on your growth and accomplishments.”

She added: “I have always wanted to visit; thank you for the invitation to your wonderful school.”

Also during the assembly, three Hillside students were honored for their achievements during the early weeks of the new school year. Noah Lawson ’13, a member of Hillside’s cross country team, was recognized for his athletic efforts; Piterson Ferdinand ’12 was saluted for his academic initiative; and Brady Caulfield ’10 was praised for his student leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the entire Hillside School community, Headmaster David Z. Beecher thanked Ms. Calvin and the DAR for their support of the school by touching upon what has become a theme to the new school year.

“During these trying times, we are making it a point to count our blessings, of which there are many,” stated Headmaster Beecher. “And among these blessings is our continuing friendship with the DAR which we will always cherish and appreciate.”
